It is known that parents play a significant role in the development of a child. As such, it is important to evaluate parent awareness in order to improve the learning process of a child. Research shows that the average awareness of parents is low. However, some studies have reported high awareness.
To measure parent awareness, the researchers used a questionnaire that was based on opinions of experts and relevant references. Participants answered five-choice questions, which were scored from zero to 100. The results of this study are a first to address parental awareness in an ethnically diverse population.
Parents’ awareness in relation to the “first thousand days” of life was lower than the average. This may be attributed to the fact that most of the information about this period of life is obtained from friends and relatives. In addition, the study found that most parents wanted to learn more about this period of their children’s lives.
Aside from the “first thousand days,” the study also looked at parents’ awareness in regard to nutrition, digital media, and the socioeconomic status of the family. It was noted that parents who were older had higher levels of awareness.
The study found that the level of parent awareness was not related to the education level of the parents. Also, the relationship between the level of parents’ education and their awareness of the “first thousand days of life” was not found to be statistically significant.
